Bringing Characters to Life Through Drama 🎭✨

One of the most exciting parts of performing arts is having the chance to step into somebody else's

shoes and become a completely different character.

At J4K, we use characters, stories and imaginative play throughout our classes to help children explore acting in a way that feels fun and accessible. Our younger children might transform themselves into princesses, superheroes, magical creatures, animals or characters from their favourite stories, while our older groups begin to explore characters in more depth through scripts, improvisation, scenes and performances.

Children learn to think about how their character might walk, talk, move, react and feel. We might experiment with different voices and facial expressions, create freeze-frames, improvise scenes or ask children to imagine how their character would respond to a completely unexpected situation!

And while it all feels like great fun, there's lots happening underneath the surface.

Character work helps children develop imagination, communication, empathy and confidence. It encourages them to express ideas, make creative choices and become comfortable performing in front of other people.

We particularly love that there isn't always one “correct” answer in drama. Two children can be given exactly the same character and bring them to life in completely different ways — and both can be brilliant.

For a child who's naturally confident, character work gives them somewhere to channel that big personality and imagination. For a quieter child, pretending to be somebody else can sometimes make performing feel much less intimidating.

And as children grow in confidence, we often see them become braver with their ideas too — putting their hands up, volunteering for characters, experimenting with silly voices and eventually standing on stage proudly performing a role they've helped to create.

At J4K, we're not looking for perfect actors. We're giving children the freedom to use their imaginations, make bold choices, have a go — and discover just how much fun becoming somebody else can be. 💙
